The Consumer Electronics Show is the hotspot for crazy, cutting-edge tech that can be sometimes borderline delusional. Brands worldwide are using artificial intelligence to create physical products, and Ropet is one such AI device. Unlike the Rabbit R1 or Humane AI Pin, it’s not trying to replace your smartphone but instead aims to replace actual living pets.
Ropet, an AI-powered robot companion, is designed to offer “personalized warmth” and aims to set a “new bar for emotional AI.” According to Ropet’s CEO and co-founder, the company has “created a companion that combines technological sophistication with genuine emotional connection.”
Its target audience is individuals who need emotional support: “Whether it’s keeping a child company, offering emotional support to an elderly family member, or simply being a calming presence in a hectic household, Ropet fits effortlessly into your life,” states the press release. However, the device includes a suite of sensors that collect your data.
Ropet features a camera, screen, microphone, speaker and processor. Its screen functions as its eyes, designed to convey emotions. Ropet can display feelings such as shyness or reluctance to interact, but petting its cozy, soft-touch exterior can lift its mood. The more you interact with it, the more unique it gets.
The AI pet connects to Wi-Fi and uses ChatGPT to engage in conversations. Ropet is an attentive listener that remembers what it sees, raising potential privacy concerns. While the company claims that “most of your data is kept locally” to ensure privacy, skepticism surrounding such products is inevitable.
That being said, interacting with Ropet is enjoyable. Similar to video games, you can earn points to exchange for new accessories and updates. The company is developing an accessory ecosystem to keep the experience fresh and engaging. For instance, you can purchase stylish outfits or creative masks to change your AI pet’s appearance. On the software side, you can customize its eyes and adjust its voice.
